The Evolution of a
World-Class Ranch
Lakewood Ranch got its start in the early
part of the last century when John Schroeder of
Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, began to assemble the land known today as the
Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR). An owner of furniture,
turpentine, milling and lumber businesses, Schroeder selected
this land for its abundant natural resources and beauty. Agriculture,
cattle ranching, vegetable and citrus farming, timber,
turf and shell mining and other businesses were added
later.
Arnold Palmer's design team created 54 holes.
In 1994, after 10 years of planning and
approvals, real estate development was added into the mix with
the introduction of Lakewood Ranch.

sidewalks along throughways and common areas.

soft paths of mulch or grass connect to the sidewalk systems

Special features such as wooden bridges and interpretive

The trail system also leads to schools,
